Brief Friday Update

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 26, 2010

Sorry ladies and gents, I still have one week of insanity left to go at work.  Here’s a few random thoughts to let you know I’m still alive and blogging (mentally)!

The Secret World – Release the third video already okay?  The gameplay trailer was incredibly “meh.”  What I saw could’ve been Champions Online with some new mobs for all I could tell.   On the bright side, we know FunCom is up to shaking up some industry standards (variable attacks in AoC) so I’m curious to see how this skill thing parses out.  Could be fairly awesome.

Spectromancer – I was huge into Magic: The Gathering when it was first out right up until they begin the real “block” structure of releases, and following close on the heels of that, the move away from the “player as planeswalker” concept.  The former diminished my interest, the latter completely killed the game for me.  I happened to catch the advert for Spectromancer through my DriveThru RPG newsletter, saw it was from the original branchild Richard Garfield, downloaded the trial version and am loving it.  It keeps all the things I loved about vintage magic, and relegates to the dustbin the thinks I don’t like.  Thankfully, it also saved me, because I was on the verge of buying some Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and I’m not sure I could have looked at myself in the mirror after that.

Mount & Blade – This was worth every penny.  Once I’ve played all its ins and outs I’ll probably get the standalone expansion/sequal that released this month.  I like the flexibility.  There truly is no one way to play.  I’ve got characters that have a party of a half dozen elite troops, and partys with a 50 troop mini-army.  But the game really shines in the seige attacks and defenses.  They put a nice tactical challenge into the game and are lots of fun.  I currently favor a two-handed sword/throwing axes/bow/arrows setup, but I appreciate the strength of other choices as well (mounted with spear or lance in particular).

Organization – Along with an extremely busy work schedule, we’ve been working ourselves to the nub to get the house ready for its annual influx of family.  We have generally around 15-17 visitors over Easter weekend, from both our families.  Our house is nice, but its not huge.  We have people sleeping on couches and in the office, sharing bathrooms, and the playroom becomes a nursery for four toddlers (triplets and a single), all currently age 3.  One of the fun parts of that cleaning/organizing though has been going through my computer game collection.  I bought a 300-disc case and have been clearing jewel cases from literally all parts of the house.  When things slow down a bit, theres a bunch of old favorites to load up.  I may have to do a “Classic Game of the Week” column!

Star Trek Online – Sorry, I haven’t played Trek at all in the last month.  My two real life friends that were supposed to be playing the game with me both dropped out without ever getting a subscription – without telling me.  I was playing with the CoW’s when I could, but they have long since outleveled me.  When things slow down a bit I’ll make a push to get my Akira, but I’ve pretty much consigned myself to owning a huge mistake here in buying the year up front.

Eve Online – I think I may be winding down here as well, though I still have a 60-day Plex in my back pocket (not literally of course).  I set Battlecruisers 5 to train19 days ago and haven’t logged in since.   I’ve contemplated why and finally come to the conclusion that I just need a change of pace and scenery.  I may dig up the post on that Amarr RPG corp that ran Level 5′s together and see what I can do about getting in.

The Reincarnation – I have struggled with my guild in the last set.  Its falling apart to be honest.  It used to be really well run and hung its hat on the concept of honor.  Now its a trash heap of miscommunication and dirty play.  Remember how last set we got jumped and I whined about it here?  Yeah, we totally did that to a different guild this set, which just began.  And not only that, we did it to the same guild that we beat the tar out of at the *end* of the last set.  That’s not only dirty, its cheap too.

Well, that’s about it – my life in games as its stands right now, so to speak.  See you Monday!

Just So You Know

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 19, 2010

The next two weeks are going to be pretty nutter around here for me.  I have a ton of work to do and family life is still off kilter as my wife continues to recover from surgery.  Sadly that process is taking longer than normal – turns out there is a good bit of secondary nerve damage in her leg as a result of the surgery.  Nobody really wants to blame or sue anyone, but its just been difficult to get a handle on her pain and find ways to get the nerve regenerated.  Because of all this, I’ll still be posting, but at a reduced rate.

Until then, I’m following the unfolding Derek Smart/Alganon story with high interest.  I even updated my Alganon client to see what changes they have done since they have gone F2P for the time being.  However, in an odd deja vu moment, I seem to be unable to play.   Poor Alganon, will it ever get it together?

I also want to give a hat tip to this great post, I’ve been meaning to do it for awhile.  And when you are done, check out this great followup to that great post.

Epic Bunny Shot

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 15, 2010

I was excited by the email in my inbox last week proclaiming three free days of access to the original Everquest in celebration of their upcoming expansion (EQ2 – take note!).   I was excited because years ago, I bought the original EQ Trilogy for a penny at a GameStop that had it on the clearence rack.  It was marked $5 but when they scanned it it came up as a penny.  The look on the cashiers face was priceless.  I told the manager he called over I didn’t mind paying the five bucks, but he shrugged it off, and I handed over a penny.

You may wonder, outside of a great deal, why that was exciting?  Because it means that I have an actual EQ account – not a trial one - and so I was eligible for the free time.  And ever since last year, I’ve been wanting to try that famous 51/50 server that starts you at epic level.  I did a little of everything, but ultimately, I spent the three days with my two favorite classes, the original Magician and original Shadowknight – now much different (both of them) from their current EQ2 incarnations.

It was fun getting to play the epic versions of classes I’d really only played for any length of time in EQOA, which is in all reality a stripped down version of its big brother. So I was dying to play around with all of the summoning skills a Magician had access too.  And the first I just had to try was “Monster Summoning” – a sweet ability that calls a pet for you, but using the graphics load of the local surroundings rather than a set Elemental pet, which is the norm for the Mage.  In this way you can get all sorts of fun pets, without running around for hours unlocking stupid achievements and paying gold through the nose (WoW – take note!).

So I stepped out into the grove outside the recommended 51/50 starter city to take on some basic mobs, and I used Monster Summoning to call my pet – figuring I’d get one of flying lizards, snakes, or maybe even an undead fisherman.  But behold, I could not have imagined the awesomeness that awaited me, for I did not know that I was still in the same area as the peaceful gardens in the city.  Check it out:

Death awaits with....well, you know.

That, my friends, is pure win.  The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog himself, under my control.  I even look a bit like Tim the Enchanter, don’t I?  Totally made my weekend people.  The urge to grab a Station Pass is getting much harder to resist.

I also found that I missed some things from EQ that don’t show up alot in games anymore – requiring components for particularly powerful spells, the possibility of spells “fizzling,” limits on number of available abilities at one time, the wide range of thrown weapons, freeform NPC interaction using keywords, food and drink requirements.

I also found a few things I’m glad we have (mostly) left behind – corpse recovery, claustrophic city models, dos-era overhead maps, non-WASD movement, etc.

But mostly this is another chance for me to push my own particular MMO Design carp – the graphic on the screen and the numbers crunching in the game engine can be two entirely seperate affairs.  There’s no reason other than lack of creativity on the part of devs that would keep someone from playing a tank that looked like a wizard, or having a tank whose weapon stats reflect a legendary sword, while on screen it looks like a simple quarterstaff.  We’ve already seen the reverse and similar ideas in other games (LotRO in particular had to bend their classes in original ways), but honest to god free character development is still lacking.  Someone step up to the plate please.  Thx.

And, as a postscript, as of this morning, I still have access to EQ, even though my three days is long gone.  Not sure if its an intentional error or not, but I’m loving it either way!  So if you have an EQ account, check your sub status, it might still be active.

Five Features EVE Still Needs

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 10, 2010

Just my personal wishlist.

1.  Locate by Distance

When I decided I needed to get serious about upping my standing with the Amarr faction,  I needed to find not only an NPC corporation to work for, but also an agent that I could start with given my low standings.  Of course the Agent Finder is a life saver in this.  But, it has a  fatal flaw in that it searches by region and system.  It just so happens that my new haunt is literally on the edge of not one, but two different regions.  In order to find the closest agent, I had to use the IGB for the Agent Finder, and then use the in game map, or a third party map, to determine the borders of my region.  Then I search mine and the two adjacent regions.  Then I had to manually go through and count jumps, or go to another site and plan a route for each of them.  It was a headache that could be alleviated by allowing you to search for agents and corp stations by distance, within the game itself.  Isn’t there some way to wire the autopilot settings from the in game map to display how distant a given agent is, or even to list the agents by distance from current location?

2.  Boarding Combat

I’m still amazed that we have such a deep and detailed space combat game, with carriers and now supercarriers, but we still have no way to launch boarding parties/marines/assault troops at enemy ships.  This is of course impractical when it comes to small size ships, and perhaps even mediums, but large and extra large varieties should do.  Particularly since such a large percentage of EVE players enjoy piracy.  Its lunacy for pirates to want to just destroy cargo vessels carrying valuable cargo.  Blackbeard didn’t sink ships and then take whatever crates of cargo happened to still be floating in the wreckage afterwards - he wanted everything in that ship, and sometimes even the ship – for himself.  Especially since NPC ships are generally considered non-capsuleer ships, it should  be easy to have a skeleton crew warp the ship to the nearest station for you to collect it later, sell it, etc.

3.  Personalized Markings

Maybe not reskinning the whole ship, for client performance and for general recognition issues, but…STO has shown us that it is possible to put stripes, decals, and such on your ship without changing the entire visual landscape.  Even just a corp logo or some pinstriping would be welcome at this point, yaknow?

4.  More Ships

I’ve seen the lists in the EVE HQ Item Browser CCP…you’re holding out on us!

5.  Make the Quad Beam Laser the Quad Pulse Laser

Including this thing in the same category as other long range weapons, when it clearly is not one, is ridiculous.  Enough said.

Scratching the Itch

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 9, 2010

Much as I love EVE and STO and space games in general, my roots are in fantasy.  I have thus far resisted the urge to spend more money on a fantasy subscription, though I do envy my brother’s dual EVE/LotRO status at the moment.   But sometimes you get lucky with something.

My brother, searching for cheap prices on Europe Universalis III, which he’s been wanting to buy for awhile now, stumbled across a game called Mount & Blade, which had a free unlimited trial to level 7.  Since they were both by Paradox, who also puts out some other games we’ve enjoyed, he decided to try it out and called me in as well.  We fast found out that the game was offline (though an online standalone expansion is being release later this month).  We also fast found it to be addictive.  Why do I mention it here?  Because alot of you are EVE players, and the big draw of EVE is its sandbox mentality.  This game echoes that perfectly

Let the bodies hit the floor...

At first I was disappointed that the game (Which functions much like an MMO btw, hence our confusion) had no spells, mana, or magic.  Instead it concentrates on being a pure Medieval simulation, though not historical at all, taking place in a fantasy kingdom with fantasy cultures, which though, are based on real life ones.  You have your Nords (Vikings), your Vaegirs (generic barbarians), Khanates (Mongols), Rhodok (English I think), and Swadia (Frank/Germanic looks like).  But I got over the lack of magic quickly.  There is still plenty of customization in your weapon, armor, and fighting style choices.  And the combat is based on skill – not just your skill sheet based on your level, but also some kinesthetic ability with the mouse and keyboard combo.  It takes some getting used to, but is not so hard its a turn off.  It plays like a cross between an MMO and a semi-real time version of Heroes of Might and Magic.

Character creation is fun, and meaningful.  The tutorial is solid, and if its not enough, you are started at some Training Grounds where you can whittle away additional time honing some skills before you start adventuring in the big bad world.  Interaction and Diplomacy are huge.  Like the common merc solider toady you are, you’ll have to do some menial tasks for the Lords before they will really respect and trust you with some of their wealth and power..and perhaps one day a fiefdom of your own.  Or go Robin Hood on them and ride around aiding villages.  Remember the old game Defender of the Crown?  This is like that but on steroids.

Graphics aren’t great, but they aren’t a turn off either.  And there is a satisfying “thunk” in the audion/video interface when you axe connects with that irritating highway bandits chest too.  And best of all, if you like the trial, the game is a mere $10 on Amazon.

My recommendation?  Get troops early and often – usually recruits from the villages – and take them to the training grounds.  Sparring with them a few times will level them into decent line troops.  If you can get your band up to 30, you should be a match for most random groups of bandits, looters, and deserters.  Yes deserters.  The five kingdoms and their related vassalages often get into full blown wars, which is difficult (alot more tougher npc’s running around to dodge or fight) but also provides some quick advancement (rescuing a captured Lord has its privilages).  The new expansion will allow you to go one step further and take on the Throne, as well as gather political marriages and expand the strategic vision of the game by adding on to kingdom management.

Anyway, now you know why I haven’t had much to say about EVE in the last couple of days eh?  This has let me scratch my sword and shield itch without breaking the bank.  Give it a shot, see what you think.

Free Game Time

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 5, 2010

As usual, I like to update you when there is free game time on the horizon.

In this case though, I’m a tad bit late!  City of Heroes/City of Villains/Soon to be: City of Rogues is having their annual Reactivation and Double XP weekend.  Check the fine print though:

  • Double XP and Re-activation Weekend Start: Thursday, March 4th at 8:59am Pacific Time (11:59am Eastern Time)
  • Double XP and Re-activation Weekend End: Sunday, March 7th at 11:59pm Pacific (2:59am Eastern Time)
  • Yep, it actually started *yesterday at noon*!  Guess thats a reward for those who actually read the announcement (that wasn’t me by the way).  Another thing to take time away from my EVE Amarr Faction grind eh?

Bonus Thought:  Since they are apparently sticklers for reading carefully, one wonderst if they realize that for Easter time plaers, “Sunday…2:59am” is actually what most of us would thing of as late Saturday night.

Bonus Bonus Thought:  Favorite CoX Power Set Combo:  Plant Control/Icy Assault/Natural = Control/Heal + Melee DPS.  Sweeeet.

    Something Epic Part II

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 3, 2010

So I’m not giving up on this.  Not that easily!  After the last post on this topic, you might be a little interested, but might ask “How does this work, how do I even begin this thing?”  So let me give you an example of how that might work.

First of all, not everyone can just jump right up and dive into a creative tour de force that will be an interesting epic level empire chock full of drama and oozing coolness.  And even those who can may need a jump start.  So what help is out there for you?  Enter Chaotic Shiny Productions page o’ random generators.  In particular you want the Culture pack  of generators, and probably the Medieval Army generator.  Later on the Accesories, Color, and Plot series of gen’s will be useful.   Chaotic Shiny gets a full five stars from me - these are incredibly useful jump starters and cover alot of terrain.  But I offer them with a word of warning – you are the final authority on your creation, not a random table.  If you want to change something…change it.

So watch and see how easy it is.  First off lets do the general Civilization generator and see what that gives us.  I choose an ancient culture, wanting something with layers upon layers of intrigue within the borders, and the shaping force I pick as religion (always a good hook).  A few things stand out as I look at the page:

    Religion
    Type: animism
    Focus: leader worship
Worship: solemn organized prayer in public temples
    Associated Artform: songs
    Prevalence: believed by all
    Holidays: very often

Looks like classic Sunday church here in the USA, but with a focus on spirits in objects.  With a high prevalence, and this being the shaping force, we can assume that priests hold high sway, and that the spirits are probably an active rather than passive guiding force.   This fits with other things in the generator, like a prevalence of natural magic, a tropical climate, and a 95% rural rate.  Next up, military:

    Military
    Strength: very strong
    Focus: sea
    Main Unit: small, stealthy ships
    Soldiers: hired mercenaries
    Main Use: quenching rebellion
    Rank: granted by superiors

So perhaps sea spirits are the most prevalent, and priestly families on the coast are the most influential.  I would assume the capital is on the coast as well.  Apparently there are many rivers in the tropical nation, or its island based, if small ship units are the primary unit that has resulted from using the military to suppress rebellion.  Even better, perhaps its a series of islands, akin to Hawaii or the the Philippines. What about the economy:

    Economy
    Main Export: semi-precious stones
    Main Import: raw ore
    Main Resource: mining – gems
    Trade: major surplus
    Strength: stable, but declining
Wealth: in the hands of a very few

Makes sense.  A relaxed island where trade is abundent and well received.  Here I make my first change.  If religion is the focus of power, then wealth is probably a little more evenly distributed than this suggests.   Consider it so changed.    So what other generators might be helpful…how about the gemstone generator?  Sounds good:

The gem is vibrant mauve. It is uncommon. It is commonly cut in trapezoids. It is associated with grounding, and willpower. It is primarily found along the coast.
Excellent – this fits our new archipelago well!  These gems help with grounding and willpower – so the spirits can be more easily contacted and put the mortal mage on equal footing with the spirit.  The gem is uncommon – but not rare.  Not everyone has  them, but its probably not hard for the mage-priests to have one, perhaps as a badge of office, maybe a necklace.  I also tap the Faction and Character generator to pull out some power players.  I end up with the Iron Spiders, an established group of rangers who back the mage-priests rule publically, and Telel, an attractive, powerful foreigner(elf on the generator, but I generalized it) who wields arcane rather than religious magic, who finds the fauna and culture of the island interesting.
Finally, I decide that the leadership on the island is a council of five mage-priests.  I use the class mashup gen, name gen, and some free association to come up with the following:
Theo, who partners with an elder spirit of strength, backed by the military.
Poral, interested in maintaining freedom for and within the island, sourced by a powerful guardian spirit.
Infar, whose neutral status gives him power as the tie-breaking vote, close to the islands plant spirits.
Vice, a shadowy priest with the most ancient of spirits behind him, who has uncertain motives.
Arcba, who is most interested in the songs and story of the island, his spirit hails from the arhipelago’s dry center.
So, I have my country, along with its basic functioning.  I have some cultural hooks. I have some power players.  But what is the island currently facing?  If this is epic, there must be some work in progress from the past, a running starting point.  For giggles, I hit the ritual generator:
Druids desiring to affect the weather must consecrate their spirit with magic in a temple during the day .
Interesting.  Infar above, in his original form, was a druid.  So Infar wants to affect the weather (in what way?), and to do so, needs to perform a ritual to strengthen his personal spirit, in some temple.  Perhaps the temple is old and ruined and needs to be found.  Perhaps the Iron Spiders know the location but aren’t talking because old Infar already wields too much power and is too far beyond their influence.  With so much to lose, I doubt Infar is conjuring bad weather – but then again, nobody would expect that, would they?  We’ll leave that thought for later.   To round it out, I hit the random random generator:  I get a widespread but not dangerous disease sweeping the island, rampant crime in a midsize town, and something to do with bronze currency (maybe, since above they have to import ores, this is an unpopular change, or one being contemplated by the council).  All of which leaves me wondering what that powerful foreign wizard will be doing – maybe he has an itch to fight some crime!
Anyway, that’s pretty much it.  To round it all out, I pull a name from the fantasy generator for my archipelago kingdom and give it a suitable moniker:  The Jaev Protectorate.  Next post we will look at how I, as a player, will set up the game stats for this powerful nation, and what my first turn will look like.

    Pulled In Every Direction

Posted by HarbingerZero on March 3, 2010

We all have those frustrating times, where, as gamers, we feel the crunch of real life.  Sometimes though, we feel the crunch of game life too, don’t we?

I have so much I want to do, so many things I want to accomplish in my games, that I just can’t seem to get enough time.  It’s rather ludicrous I’m sure.  I get, on any given week, about 3 decent gaming nights, where I can log in and play, mostly uninterrupted, for 3 hours or so.  Another 3 nights a week, I can usually get an hour in, sometimes two.  So, I fit into that 11-15 hour a week bracket.  Not nearly as much as some of you, I’d wager, and not as much as I’d like.  But all things considered – it should be more than enough.

EVE works well in this, with its paced skill training.  I can log in or not, accomplish some things in the time period I’m on, and I don’t feel a sense of urgency – like I’ve missed something important and now feel flustered that I have to keep up.  That’s one of the reasons its lasted so long.  Here, I want to contribute something to my mostly industrial based corp, and finish up some personal goals of raising Amarr standings and getting into a Command Ship.

I also used my Christmas money to shell out for the reduced rate one-year sub on STO.  As others have noted, its a good game for an hour diversion, do a mission or two, and then on to other things.  Some of the Casualties guild though have already max leveled, apparently unaware that Cryptic has doggedly refused to follow the models for advancement that some other MMO’s have.  For me, I’d like to get into my T3 ship – probably an Akira of some sort, despite my Science background.  I’m still a good 5.5 levels away though.

And that’s currently it, outside of the 15 minutes a day or so I make with my freebie game The Reincarnation.  And I’d still like to get that epic fantasy empire shared-writing/game thing going.

And I’m feeling a void still.  I had great fun in Star Wars this past month, and it ate into my time in all of the above games.  And I have looked longingly at the new EQ2 expansion, much to my disgust (the expansion, like the last several, offers nothing to players who are not already top level or close to it).  I even have a small urge to take another swing at Vanguard.  Which is leading me to believe I have a fantasy itch to scratch somewhere along the line.

But…if I pick up another MMO, or even dive into a single player game – I get that much more frustrated at not being able to do the things I want to do in the other games.  I’m sure this is a byproduct of stress in my real life.  The more difficult things are here, the more I want to kick back and have fun somewhere else.  And things are pretty difficult here right now.  So much so that even on some of the good gaming nights, I never even crack open my computer.  I can’t manage the emotional or mental energy to commit to even playing a game, I just kinda veg out.  And that just adds vinegar to the wounds.

Anyway, enough of my griping.  Life is difficult, but there are others with much more difficult things to deal with.  And there are people with lots more game time than me, but also people with alot less.  So I guess the message of the day here from Harbinger Zero is this:

Play what you can, when you can, and enjoy every minute of it.  And I’ll try to do the same.
